Subgridding Scheme for FDTD in Cylindrical Coordinates

چکیده

A grid resolution compensation scheme based on subgridding is proposed and evaluated for improving the performance of the finite-difference time-domain method implemented in cylindrical coordinates. The scheme introduces subgrids into the domain with smaller azimuthal grid spacings. This work investigates interpolation methods used for estimating unknown but required field values at the interface between grids with different azimuthal grid spacings. It is found that cubic, cubic spline and trigonometric interpolation cause less than 1% error in estimating the frequencies of the propagating modes of a microstructured optical fiber. Multiple subgrids have the potential for significant domain size reduction and minimum time step enlargement.

A Novel Nonuniform Subgridding Scheme for Fdtd Using an Optimal Interpolation Technique

Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) subgridding schemes can significantly improve efficiency of various electromagnetic circuit simulations. However, numerous subgridding schemes suffer from issues associated with stability, efficiency, and material traverse capability. These issues limit general applicability of FDTD subgridding schemes to realistic problems. Herein, a robust nonuniform subgr...

BOR-FDTD subgridding based on finite element principles

In this paper a recently developed provably passive and stable 3D FDTD subgridding technique, based on finite elements principles, is extended to Body-Of-Revolution (BOR) FDTD. First, a suitable choice of basis functions is presented together with the mechanism to assemble them into an overall mesh consisting of coarse and fine mesh cells. Invoking appropriate masslumping concepts then leads to...

A Dissipation Theory for Three-Dimensional FDTD with Application to Stability Analysis and Subgridding

The finite-difference time-domain algorithm is a popular numerical method for solving electromagnetic problems. FDTD simulations can suffer from instability due to the explicit nature of the method. Enforcement of stability can be particularly challenging in scenarios where a setup is composed of multiple components, such as differently refined FDTD grids, macromodels, advanced boundary conditi...

Finite-difference computation of transient electromagnetic waves for cylindrical geometries in complex media

We present two novel, fully three-dimensional (3-D) finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) schemes in cylindrical coordinates for transient simulation of electromagnetic wave propagation in complex (inhomogeneous, dispersive, and conductive) and unbounded media. The proposed FDTD schemes incorporate an extension of the perfectly matched layer (PML) absorbing boundary condition (ABC) to three-dime...
